It can truly be a challenge to balance writing with the demands of everyday life. Many of us have full-time jobs, families, and partners to take care of, which can make it difficult to find time and energy for writing. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to make it work!

To begin with, you need to take care of yourself. Make sure you have what it takes for you to feel well. A social life, a hobby (as writing is work), exercise, or something else. Your body and soul need to be in balance for you to succeed in this odyssey, which is writing a book.

Here are some strategies that can help you balance writing with everyday life:

  • Create a consistent writing routine: Decide to write at a specific time every day or week. It can be in the morning before the rest of the day starts or in the evening when everything has settled down. Establishing a routine makes it easier to prioritize writing and ensure that it happens.
  • Plan and organize: Try to plan your time in advance and make room for writing. Block off time in your calendar or use a to-do list to keep track of your writing goals. By being organized, you can ensure that there is time for writing even during busy periods.
  • Minimize distractions: Identify what distracts you when you try to write and try to minimize them. Turn off your phone or put it on airplane mode, set up a writing zone where you can concentrate without being disturbed. Turn off Wi-Fi and enable “do not disturb” mode.
  • Take small steps: If you have limited time, it can feel overwhelming to sit down and write a whole novel. Instead, you can start with short writing sessions or set smaller goals. The important thing is to keep writing regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time.
  • Seek support: Having support from people in your environment can be very helpful. Share your writing with your partner, family, or close friends, and ask for their understanding and support. They can help you stay motivated and provide you with the time and space you need to write.

Remember that balancing writing with everyday life is a process that can be unique to each individual. It’s about finding what works best for you and adapting it to your own needs and circumstances. Don’t give up, even small progress can lead to bigger results!
